The pagoda architecture consist of 5 buildings in an harmonious combination of local and European styles. It contains numerous precious wooden statues, including those of 18 Arhats carved in 1907 and representing the peak of the Mekong Delta sculpture period. Departure from your hotel around 8:00 and we cross part of the Mekong Delta to the small town of Sa Dec, made famous by the French writer Marguerite Duras, who was born in Sa Dec, in her novel « The Lover ». We visit the Lover’s Mansion (Huynh Thuy Le) and the beautiful Kien An Cung Pagoda, Mandarin Quach’s ancient mansion (1926), where his descendants still live. After lunch in a house of the Flower Nursery District, we continue our tour until the small river town of Long Xuyen, from which we take a ferry to the idyllic Tiger island (Cu Lao Ong Ho). Dinner and night in a charming homestay among plants, flowers and small channels. |
Day 2 : TIGER ISLAND - LONG XUYEN MARKET - CAI BE (3 meals)
After breakfast, we ride a bicycle though Tiger island, among palm trees, banana trees, bougainvilleas and small channels. We then go the large Long Xuyen Market. Lunch at the market, followed by the car ride to the small river town of Cai Be, where we have dinner and the night in a bungalow of the very elegant Mekong Lodge Eco-Resort. |
Day 3: CAI BE – BEN TRE – SAIGON (breakf, lunch)
We first ride to the Island of Ben Tre. Boating on the Ben Tre River to observe the life of the local people (visit of markets, small brick factory, coconut treatment factories, etc.). The boat continues on canals to reach Cai Son and Nhon Than, where we visit a family mat workshop. Stroll in the peaceful countryside and lunch in the home of Mr. Hai Hao. Day 4 : AN BINH ISLAND – CAI BE – SAIGON (breakf, lunch)
In the morning, we take another ferry to arrive at the small town of Cai Be. We take a boat to visit the Ancient Houses of the District of Dong Hoa Hiep, some dating back 1838 ; lunch in the house of Mr. Ba, built in 1938 among several acres of orchards. Return to Saigon end of the afternoon. |

Chau Doc, located on the Hau River, a tributary of the Mekong River, is a border town between the south of Vietnam and Cambodia. A speedboat joins the town to Phnom Penh in 5 hours. After breakfast, we visit the Chau Doc Market and then go to the harbor by tuk tuk to board a sampan around 11:00 for a 2-day cruise. It starts with the visit of a traditional Cham village, and then sails down the river among myriads of sampans loaded with all kinds of goods: fruits, vegetables, fish, sand, etc. and passing alongside islands. Before the village of Cho Moi, we take a small tributary of the Mekong, with stops to observe the local daily life and several 19th century temples. |
After breakfast, we visit the Long Xuyen Floating Market, the largest in the delta, and then cruise of the Tien Giang River to arrive at the charming town of Sa Dec, famous for its colonial houses and the birthplace of the French writer Marguerite Duras. Visit of the Huynh Thuy Mansion, the « Blue House » of her novel « The Lover »; lunch on board and continuation of the visit of the town: colonial houses, temples, 18th century Communal House, etc. We then continue the cruise via Vinh Long.
